Welcome to a no-nonsense down-to-business attitude

Groningen is a young dynamic university city in the North of the Netherlands. Known for its no-nonsense down-to-business attitude, it's a place that works hard but also plays hard. A third of Groningen’s population are students. Half is under 35. And half of the workforce has a university degree. Their highly acclaimed University of Groningen mixes a 400 year tradition with cutting-edge work in several natural, technical and medical sciences. More than 120 startups were founded in this region in the last year.

Groningen is already home to many awesome fast growing startups including crowdynews, Voys, Experty, Kalooga, Belsimpel, Lookingforbooking, Paylogic, Dataprovider and Chordify.

The city has led the way in start-ups tackling not only the theme of healthy ageing: also smart-energy, ICT, new materials, gaming and water-tech are booming. Check out a wide range of incubators, like R&D Hotel on the pioneering Healthy Ageing Campus. It’s right next to the country’s largest academic hospital (UMCG). Never afraid of disruptive change, the city has led the way in rethinking education methods. No wonder Google recently chose Groningen as the smart location for their expansion plans starting in 2016. The region is proud of Energy Academy Europe which is driving the transition to a sustainable energy future. The academy provides education, conducts research and fosters innovation.

Look at Groningen as a frontrunner, offering your startup access to 60,000 students and more than 1800 Ph.D’s. Several regional initiatives like Cube050 and energy transition centre Entrance are growing exponentially. That includes a range of activities for makers and serial entrepreneurs at the Van Elmpt centre such as: MediacentraleLaunchcafeFablab, Venturelab North and the new Big Building.
