Girls use more health care than boys

Especially girls in psychological distress use health care. Initially, they go to their GP for help. This is shown by the long-running TRAILS study of 2,300 children and young people in the Northern Netherlands.

Researchers at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) followed a decade to what degree children and young people have mental health problems and when they ask for help. There is a remarkable increase; At the age of 11, 20 percent use care in connection with emotional or behavioral problems; this rose to 32 percent at the age of 19 This increase was caused primarily by the treatment demand by girls.
