On Campus: Construction for high-tech cancer treatment center starts soon

The Netherlands get two new centers for the treatment of cancer with the so-called proton therapy. Delft and Groningen starts in about two months the construction of clinics where patients will be treated. In 2017 the first patients have to be treated in the centers.

In the method for new cancer patients Netherlands be irradiated with protons and not with photons, as with traditional radiation treatments. The irradiation with protons has the advantage that less damaged tissue around a tumor. The patient has fewer side effects. Especially for children, the treatment is considered by protons of interest, because the harmful effects of radiation can have a large impact on them.
